IAVI-INDIA
Established in 2013, IAVI-INDIA is committed to make public health solutions accessible to all. We focus on facilitating the development of biomedical prevention products for diseases of concern such as HIV, TB, COVID-19, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Through our partnerships with the Government of India and other private entities, we aim to accelerate equitable access, with a particular emphasis on vulnerable populations.
Our Objectives
- Facilitate, partner, collaborate and establish centres of excellence toward designing, early development and clinical testing of biomedical products for the conduct of:
- Scientific research and development
- Site, community, epidemiology and research preparedness activities
- Technology transfer and adaptation
- Promote implementation research of new technologies, tools and solutions to enhance uptake and access for diseases of concern in India.
Our Activities
IAVI-INDIA conducts a number of activities aligned with our objectives. Through a network of partners (governmental, non-governmental, for-profit and not-for-profit), both Indian and international, IAVI-INDIA:
- Has partnered with the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) for the development of its “Mission Program for Accelerating Biopharmaceutical Innovation in India”
- Has partnered with Department of Biotechnology and Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, to help build collaborative research programs in HIV and HIV/TB between India and South Africa, and India and the Netherlands
- Has partnered with YRGCARE, Chennai, for establishing an integrated healthcare platform in a pilot district of Kerala
- Has partnered with BIRAC to establish a Knowledge Integration and Translation (KnIT) Platform for promoting health system innovations, particularly in the area of maternal and child health
- Has designed and introduced various interactive Social and Behavioural Communication Change (SBCC) programs and initiatives using human-centered design and experiential learning tools and platforms with the intent to: Democratize (breaking down complex science and bringing it within the reach of non-scientists and community members), contextualize (communicating through metaphors and cultural references that people are familiar with and find relevant in their local context), and humanize (bringing out the human facets and stories behind the science to make it relatable).
Our Projects
Knowledge Integration and Translation (KnIT) initiative Program:
IAVI-INDIA provides support to the BIRAC-led Knowledge Integration and Translation (KnIT) initiative to conduct a multi-pronged analysis of existing gaps in current health systems in India across different disease domains and regions, to arrive at a systems-level diagnosis and propose contextualized and targeted solutions to policy makers. IAVI-INDIA supports KnIT in the domain of maternal and neonatal child health through extensive evidence synthesis efforts encompassing systematic literature reviews, quantitative and qualitative research methods, analysis of secondary datasets, key stakeholder engagement, conduct of focused technical consultations, and drafting of consultation briefs and academic publications.
Indo-Dutch Program:
The Indo-Dutch partnership for comparative HIV research led by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) in India and Erasmus Medical University in the Netherlands is leveraging next-generation technologies like proteomics, transcriptomics, deep sequencing towards biomarker identification to better understand disease progression in different populations of interest (early HIV infection and chronic HIV infection) and conduct comparative studies to unravel new methods of tackling critical challenges such as latency, persistence and functional cure. It supports knowledge enhancement and technology transfer through exchange visits for researchers, PhD fellowships for research scholars, and capacity building through a bilateral partner network. The work is being implemented by a consortium of investigators from varied disciplines across India and Netherlands.
Indo-South Africa Program:
As a pioneering partnership under the bilateral Science and Technology Cooperation between India and South Africa, the Indo-South Africa collaboration for HIV and HIV-TB coinfection research leverages the similarities and variances in the clade-C strain of the HIV virus found in both countries to advance joint studies in HIV and HIV-TB, by linking institutions of excellence and key scientific leaders across the two nations. This collaboration is focused towards advancing development of new products specific to the regional needs and building scientific leadership in the two countries through mutual capacity building.
Mission COVID Suraksha Program:
As response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Department of Biotechnology (DBT) through BIRAC as implementation partner, initiated Mission COVID Suraksha for ensuring accelerated COVID-19 vaccine development in country. The program supports development of COVID-19 vaccine candidates and strengthen ecosystem through establishing clinical trial sites, immunoassay laboratories, facilities for animal studies for their accelerated development.
IAVI-INDIA supported the development of Program proposal through conducting gap analysis and stakeholder consultations for assessing vaccine development roadblocks in country. IAVI-INDIA works as the Knowledge Partner to support implementation of the Program, that includes leading feasibility assessments for technical appropriateness ofprojects planned, identification on new technologies to accelerate vaccine development, and providing landscaping and real-time updates on COVID-19 vaccines.
The National Biopharma Mission (Innovate in India – i3) Program:
The “Innovate in India (i3) Empowering biotech entrepreneurs & accelerating inclusive innovation” or the National Biopharma Mission (NBM) initiated by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), is an Academia-Industry Collaborative Mission for Accelerating Discovery Research to Early Development for Biopharmaceuticals. The objective of the Mission is to enable and nurture an ecosystem for preparing India’s technological and product development capabilities in biopharmaceuticals including vaccines, biologics, medical devices and diagnostics to a level that will be globally competitive over the next decade.
IAVI-INDIA’s role has been:
- As Program Proposal Management Unit (PPMU), developed the proposal through extensive landscape analysis, gap mapping and feasibility assessments
- As Knowledge Management Partner:
- Providing scientific and market insights, industry analytics, competitive intelligence, and conduced needs and feasibility assessment, stakeholder outreach for identification and prioritization of new opportunities for strategic investments
- Delineating key technical and scientific requirements to structure appropriate calls for proposals
- Providing latest information and evidence through trackers, scientific updates to enable quick and efficient decision-making
- Facilitating measures to ensure accessibility, uptake and distribution of the Products, inclusive of target product profile development, policy and regulatory facilitation, assessments, inter-ministerial stakeholder engagement etc.
